Toyota Aims To Settle Sudden Acceleration Claims Once And For All

Forbes -- Toyota Motor fought vigorously in recent years to defend itself against claims that its vehicles were prone to speeding out of control with no warning. And for the most part, it succeeded: no electronic defect was ever found, and Toyota has since bounced back strongly in the market. This year, it is expected reclaim from General Motors the title of world’s largest automaker.

But with multiple lawsuits still hanging over its head, the Japanese carmaker decided it would rather settle than keep fighting. Its North American unit announced Wednesday that it would pay about $1.1 billion to install new safety equipment and reimburse owners of up to 16 million cars in order to settle a class-action suit stemming from the infamous sudden-acceleration complaints.

No defect found sounds suspicious. Chrysler claimed there was no defect in their vans causing headlights to shine way high when filled with people who weigh very little. My friend found a place on the web where many owners had the same problem. Along the lines of the Toyota speeding up, my Dynasty did it more than once.

I always wondered how many of the people involved in the "sudden acceleration" incidents were responsible for them themselves.

No matter the truth, the media will get you just for the story. I did not believe toyota had an acceleration issue on millions of cars, but infantile journalism did.
