In 2 or 3 hundred years, Carl Pope may actually be correct in his insistence the alternative fuels replace most of the world demand for oil and natural gas. Hopefully with another 200 or 300 years of R&D progress the various alternative energy concepts of today and many tomorrows will actually come up with one or more sustainable, practical, and cost effective alternative fuels not using arable land nor human/animal food sources that will allow the world to wean itself away from fossil fuels to the necessary degree.
All but the very few delusional environmental extremist knows that Carl Pope's vision will not occur in our lifetimes nor probably within the 21st century. The problem with the Carl Popes of this world is that they demand to have this future today at any cost.

Just like the issue of climate change, here are too starkly different opinions on energy independence.

notice that this article did not come out before Obama was reelected?
They have their priorities straight. Get the most Liberal Senator who became the most Liberal President (it would be fair to label him a "European Socialist") in place, before pointing out unpleasant issues.

This article is published by the Huffington Post and authored by the president of the Sierra Club. Two of the most disreputable and dangerous organizations on the planet. Under no circumstances do rational people give any credence to such lunatics. The Sierra Club wants us all to move back to the stone age. Not gonna happen.

NRU has a point. The real issue is, when "alternative" sources come up to be developed if the GREEN fanatics will alow them to go forward. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Freeze in the dark, peons, is Sierra's motto.

It does not matter who wrote it, or what bent he has in writing it. We need to stop supporting Putin - his revenue is from oil, and we need to stop funding terrorism - their revenue stream is oil. No matter how much more we produce, until we cut demand for it, we are still contributing to them. Put the federal fleet on CNG, build a bunch of nukes, and start shifting all our energy needs away from coal and oil - why is it that worshiping large corporations is viewed as "American" - Bobby Jindal is right - we need to stop being stupid and look at the larger picture.

To the Dragnet theme: Doom DO Doom Doom!
The former executive director and chairman, Sierra Club (the author) suggests you'll feel better if you hug a tree.

The author of this article is from the Sierra Club, one of the largest tree-hugger organizations in the world. Not sure I would put a whole lot of time believing what this guy is selling unless your ready to sell your car and move back into the forest to live.

Gloom and Doom. The world is coming to an end! I think we need to worry about our debt and spending more money than we have (government AND personal). If we resolve that (a huge issue that will require a LOT of work) where we get our energy from will not be such a big deal.

Less than 10% of the oil we consume in the U.S. is from the Middle East.
While we have a dependence on oil today, there are emerging technologies which are being tested and refined all the time that are only beginning to wean us off our dependence on oil.
Think of the Titanic turning (port-rounding) the iceberg. It seemed that the ship was not turning even though the rudder was hard over. Eventually, it began to turn.
Sadly, and I hope this is not the case for us, it still hit the edge of the submerged section of the iceberg - hitting something unseen. That is the part I fear.

People should not relax on this issue until they get rid of Middle East oil and gain some control over local energy sourcing. If any kind of news keeps it our face, fine.

I think it's pretty evident that people who don't like people who don't like the Sierra Club are the ones adding nothing to the conversation! That's just a show of typical liberal ignorance, telling other people to shut up if they don't think like they do!
