Senate votes to lift ban on building new nuclear plants

Chicago Sun-Times -- The Illinois Senate voted Monday to undo a 23-year-old ban on the construction of new nuclear plants in a move one anti-nuclear activist predicted could turn Illinois into a “radioactive waste repository.”

Sen. Mike Jacobs (D-East Moline) said the legislation, which passed 40-1 and now moves to the House, is necessary to position the state for billions of federal dollars from President Obama’s administration for new nuclear plants and thousands of resulting construction jobs.

“The mood toward nuclear energy has cooled, and people aren’t as wary of it as they used to be,” said Jacobs, who has the Quad Cities nuclear plant in his district. “It’s proven itself to be a very safe clean technology.”

That is great. But, what does it have to do with gasoline unless salazar will now quit messing around with oil and leases already issued and then taken back.

'Bout time. Wind and solar are good and have a place, but nothing comes close to nuclear for generating clean energy on a large scale.

Illinois has added lots of wind power production. Nuclear is our best bet to supply clean power for the future. Along with reprocessing very little waste. Just look at the mountains of fly ash outside coal plants!

"Senate, Sen. Jeff Schoenberg (D-Evanston), said Illinois should focus on wind and solar energy production instead of increased nuclear capacity" I agree, the big issue with me is nuclear waste.

Yes, it is about time we do this. Hopefully this isn't just window dressing.

Personally I would like to see a plant fueled by all the anti-nuclear kooks that have been holding our country in the dark ages. I don't think that the kooks generate many BTU's when they combust, so maybe they just use a bunch of large hamster wheels.

Nuclear plants must not be set in populated areas. If a leak can happen, it will happen.

Mustangrus is right, I grew up nearer to one with no problems other than heated water into Lake Ontario. There's the remote possibility of catastrophic events but can be managed, just like living near a refinery.

Nuclear, the way to go. We have lived near a plant for nearly 40 years and we don't glow yet. It has supplied our rural area with many, many high paying jobs.

A big percentage of people probably think building a nuclear plant is fine. Just don't build it in their backyard.

Nuclear is certainly safe but we need to do more R&D on fuel reprocessing. The waste issues are real, but they could be significantly reduced by fuel reprocessing. We should be using coal and nuclear for electricity and saving our oil and gas for vehicles and homes.

"position the state for billions of federal dollars from President Obama’s administration for new nuclear plants". If the technology is proven and viable, why the massive incentive? Can you imagine the monetary kickback on this venture?

It's time the US shed it's aversion to nukes. Yes, accidents can happen. You cannot engineer risk completely out of something as complex as a reactor. Is the risk acceptable? Most accidfental deaths in the US are the result of auto accidents. Most of those are Human error. It's acceptable.

I am really surprised this came out of a democratic congress. You have to give them credit when they get it right. Now just kill the health bill and they may stay in office.

Now I wish the US congress would lift the ban on recycling spent Nuke rods. Jimmy Carter's ban on doing this, is no longer needed. The rest of the world recycles their spent waste. It gets rid of the problem of what to do with the waste. And it provides Plutonium to the Military.

Long overdue. It's about time.

Now, build, build, build.

And get the grid updated to handle the power efficiently.

Git'r done.
