Rail trumps pipeline for oil companies

Bismarck Tribune -- When Oneok Partners LP recently pulled its proposed $1.8 billion, 1,300-mile pipeline -- to connect North Dakota’s Bakken crude oil production with refineries in Tulsa, Okla. -- many people here were caught off guard. There had been a steady drum beat of demand for more pipelines to get the state’s crude to market and reduce price discounting for sweet Bakken crude.

in light of the W. VA explosion / fire after pipeline burst, rail may just be safer.

Rail clearly adapts quickly.

However, derailment = spill and costs are higher.

Of course, given how the energy picture is changing, I can certainly
see where one may worry about how useful a pipeline may be 20 years from now.

Rail does offer more options, but pipelines are by no means a thing of the past.

As the article states:

"Much of the focus had been on moving North Dakota crude to refineries in Tulsa. But the big increases in domestic oil production have created an over supply in the Tulsa area. That’s where the Bakken Express was headed, and that’s where Keystone XL intends to connect before heading to the Gulf."

The Keystone XL's purpose is to EXPORT crude oil!! Wake up America!

Rail transport has always been one of the best, if not the best way to transport bulk commodities. Crude, on the other hand, as are many liquids and gases, more efficiently and effectively transported via pipelines.

If it were not for those Rocky fellers we would still be shipping in barrels instead of tank cars.

Pipelines will likely come later. Rail satisfies the immediate need and can apparently handle the volume.

Probably a lot of rail cars being built to handle the required huge volume.

Ship by rail! You can send your product to any destination; pipelines go to just one or a few destinations. I wish I had been able to buy some BNSF stock several years ago.

A train wreck, a pipe bust......what's the difference? Transporting oil no matter how you do it is going to continue. That's a fact!

Just one train wreck and a big oil spill will be the end of rail transporting oil.

I would think that a buried pipeline is better than an exposed rail line.
