Is 40 the New 30 for People and Auto Mileage?

Huff Post -- For years we've been hearing about the surprising vim and vigor of people who hit age milestones like 4, which once meant the downhill slide had begun. Now 40 is being touted as the new 30. We wondered if this milestone for people was true for mileage per gallon in cars. Is 40 miles per gallon (mpg) the new 30?

Could this be the de facto standard for a new crop of vigorous, green machines that promise to cart our gracefully aging selves around while taking baby sips of fuel or electrons?

My colleague, Dan Karnowsky, and I kicked the tires and asked the manufacturers during the two press preview days at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show that opens Friday, November 30 and runs through December 9.

The second day started off with the Green Car of the Year award going to the promising 2013 Ford

All they care about is MPGs; not safety.

At 4 you still have your whole like ahead of you. What's news about this?

Perhaps someone needs an editor as well as 'spell check'?

Those of us that want to be financially secure want cars and trucks that have low operating costs. The lower the better.

It may be an interesting concept, but I do not believe the new fuel mix of CNG and EVs with gasoline and diesel fuel will allow this measurement to remain viable.

It makes sense to always expect the bar to be raised. But there are physical laws that cannot be broken. We will hit a limit at some point.

40mpg sounds good, but who can afford to buy the car? What happened to the time when I complained that $3,500 for a NEW car was too expensive?

"4" a milestone? I don't think many folks start the downhill slide at "4"? They're just kids.

The increase in new car prices far exceeds the savings in gas mileage.

While it makes me feel all good inside to think we are going to get 40-50 mpg in a car, it makes me crazy to know it will cost more to buy the car than I could ever recoup in increased fuel efficiency. Why would I be stupid enough to buy one?

40 is still 40 - it seems as the mpg goes up the full size cars get smaller - pretty soon a 40 year old may not fit in it with a family

Fuel cell technology & using the technology from the "how far can you go" annual competitions could increase MPG.
