China’s Rapid Growth Shifts the Geopolitics of Oil

New York Times -- The recession also precipitated a milestone for Saudi Arabia and the global energy market. While China’s successful economic policies paved the way for a quick rebound there, the recession caused a deeper slowdown in the United States, slashing oil consumption by 10 percent from its 2005-7 peak. As a result, Saudi Arabia exported more oil to China than to the United States last year.

While exports to the United States might rebound this year, in the long run the decline in American demand and the growing importance of China represent a fundamental shift in the geopolitics of oil.

The American talk about energy independence rankles Saudi officials, who maintain that the goal is unrealistic and could end up damaging energy markets by undermining investment now, thus leading to higher price

ronsimonil: try again. If nothing else, they hold most of the debt that the USA accrued abroad in their hot little hands. Not like they will go empty handed for a long while. Unless the Yuan is being forced to adjust to market fluctuations. That my friend is a whole 'nudda ball o' wax.

EVH: they have gotten there b/c Americans wanted cheaper and more throwaway. And that didn't sit well with those who were brought up to make quality products in the USA.

if the Chinese are smart, they'll find alternative fuels and find them FAST. Their investment into solar is a sign that they will be smarter than the behemoth of America.

unicornpmb,

When you say, "What we don't use someone else will."

I agree with you in part, but that leads us to the premise of greed, which can become "Consume now before someone else does".

This is a lose lose game and we must alter our thinking.

Wonder how much of that oil going to China ends up in products and transportation for those products to the WalMarts and Home Depots etc. in North America?

Yeah, judgemobile, as much as Obama likes to think of himself as a Lincoln, he would fail at trying to keep the union together. In fact, he may even find himself to be President of The United States of DC. Then he can appoint himself as King of DC and kiss mirrors for the rest of his life.

tedjm1 for President--

and let's start the new Constitutional Convention Monday if those morons in Washington pass "O'Bummer Care". 37 states have already passed a SOVREIGNTY resolution. it takes 3/4 of the total states (or actually 38) to start a new country.

China is the coming thing. Economic growth is going great guns. China and India are 2 countries that will step over the U.S. The U.S. politicians (our leaders) do nothing for our country because they are too caught up in partisan politics. Maybe its time to have no parties, but people who honestly want to take our country to the heights it deserves.

If the U.S. doesn't embrace Reagan-era growth policies SOON, China will become the major oil player to compete with OPEC instead of the U.S.

They are going to sell the oil wherever they can as they want it converted to cash. Our choice is alternatives. In the end we will all move to alternatives and they can keep their oil. Conservation keeps your money in your pocket.

What I have read and heard on the radio is that China's economic stimulus plan has been used for bridges to nowhere, invisible buildings because they have no tenants and little prospects of tenants, and gambling and speculating. China may get walloped financially because of that, and I don't know if a financially struggling China is a good thing or bad thing? So I wonder if China will be able to maintain its oil usage if it goes into a bad recession?

China grows and the us well I won't finish the rest of that statement. We need a president who put the people that voted him in and cares about the economy first and foremost. The idiot that is in office now has no common sense and is in it for his own agenda! He keeps going the way hes going hes going to make george bush jr look like a saint!

Don't forget, China is aware and has witnessed that nations, like the US, once they have a large producing and spending market, take a demand for fuel resources.

For that reason, China can take the experience we have had here and know ways to aviod having the same problem we have had will reliaing on Saudi Arabia for Fuel.

It is no surprice the China is going to need more fuel reaources, but can the US finally understand that it is about time to relia on their owns selves.

Energy independence is a pipe dream unless we develop practical ways to harness natural gas for auto fuel. I know the technology is already available but there is no race to develop the infrastructure to allow us to substitute lng or cng for gasoline.
