Many people have asked and continue to wonder- "why are gas prices rising?" There are many answers, all of which are quite complicated. See- gasoline prices are complicated. How prices are determined, how wholesale prices rise and drop- its not easy to figure out.
I thought that many would like to know- what's driving gas prices today? There are a few factors, some more responsible than others, for prices rising as of late. Keep in mind these factors are all my opinion- there's no ultimate answer to what is most responsible- but I'll try to state what I believe and keep any bias to a minimum, or better yet- have no bias.
Factors currently behind gasoline prices:

Supply and demand does not exist for gasoline prices at the pump.

To humblepie in Toledo:
You should place blame for the economy (and unemployment) on the business world that has allowed its GREED to rule the manner in which it has been doing business ... and still does business today. These companies believe they will generate more profit from continuing in business without the need to rehire those they fired so that they wouldn't have to spend as much to stay in business.
And if you believe the government started stimulus payments with this current administration in Washington, you have not learned your history lesson. It began prior to 2009.

As they said the driver is Heat oil production taking up gasoline capacity which allow the refinery to limit the excess gasoline supply, read that maintain prices in a down demand market, and yes drive of winter diesel prices at the same time. Throw in refinery maintenance shutdowns.

What pipe line oil spill in Illinois? What the speculators disregard in their insanity is that just because unemployment may decrease a bit in 1 report does not mean the economy has turned around. Give people a chance to regroup & get back on their feet before sticking it to us.

The quicker we move on to other means of energy to power our cars & trucks, the quicker prices will drop. Then we will wonder why we left oil as a main fuel for transportation. Oil is used to manufacture other products, and these will be cheaper to make, and will bring down the price of these products. We need to get back into a manufacturing nation, and bring home the jobs.

I truly like that! If you speculate on oil, you bought it! Now store what you purchased! That would end the Monopoly Money rules!! Ship the product to the buyer.

End the ability for speculators to bid the price up by making them take delivery of the oil.

If the US economy and jobs were driving factors in gas prices it would be around $1.25 a gallon!

Say what ever you want but the #1 real true reason is GREED!!!!! the #2 reason is Speculation. Supply & Demand has nothing to do with gas prices any more.

I agree with the Refineries/maintenance for now.. Hurricane season has not effectively shut anything down...I hope supply and demand play a significant role.

I have to agree about speculation, as for China there will always be a threat that drives the price either way.

Blah Blah Blah Blah.....greed and speculation are dictating prices. Why did gas shoot up 12 cents overnight Wednesday in Council Bluffs and remain the same high price elsewhere in SW IA when oil prices went down?
