Gasoline theft foiled; HAZMAT cleanup follows

GasBuddy Blog -- Tempting as it may be... don't try this.

Earlier this week in Tampa, FL two guys decided they were fed up with rising gas prices and weren't going to take it any more. At a BP station where diesel was selling for $3.89, these characters had every intention of filling up... but no intention of paying for it.

Of course, police around the country anticipate similar theft attempts by other schemers as prices go higher.

Peter Linton Smith, FOX News, reported that when the station was closed, the men parked their van atop a storage tank and started stealing gas. Their van was specially rigged for fuel theft.

"They cut a hole in the bottom of the van," Hillsborough Sheriff's Captain...

The real gasoline theft is the outrageous prices the oil companies charge us.

Something similar like this has been reported before but these thieves drove away. The pump continued to pump fuel, filling the inside tank and spilling onto the ground. Creating a fire hazard until the fuel could be cleaned up.
As the price of fuel continues to go up, more things like this will happen?
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using ‘other’ forms of transportation to help lower your cost.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

doh! why not get a truck drivers license(and maybe actually work for pay to afford fuel or get a job using a assumed name),then get a job driving a fuel truck out of state, then just drive the load to a designated area and unload it into 50 gallon barrels.or just take the tanker to someone and sell it to them then claim you were hijacked at gunpoint.or do what the crook on chips did one time and tap into the pipeline and have your own valve right in your back yard.:)they could have easily got the fuel at a construction company that has their own tanks on site.but then again dumb criminals usually get caught.

No, it's not really about the price of gas, a theft is a theft, will find something to steal to make money.

I have a feeling this is more about finding a theft opportunity than being "fed up" with prices.

I feel fed up with the price of some food items, but I don't rip off the supermarket.

Even with prices up, that's a long way to go to STEAL. Plus one spark and boom.

With the conditions of today, low economy & high gas prices, thefts like this can't really be much of a surprise.

DUH!! The only smart criminals seem to be the ones in the movies who pull off a major jewel heist.

I knew someone who tried this back in the 1980's during the ol' gas shortage. At first they got away with it, then something went wrong and hilarity ensued. Fun for the whole family you might say.

This doesn't surprise me. I expect to read many more unique and/or dumb attempts to steal gas as the prices continue to climb to record levels.
